He said they were just friends now, but I didn’t believe him. ‘Just friends?’ I scoffed and shook my head in incredulity. ‘So why all the secrecy?’ He sighed, obviously frustrated. ‘It is complex.’ His ambiguous comments did nothing to soothe my concerns. I could tell there was more he wasn’t saying. My distrust intensified, fuelling my rage and eagerness to uncover his lies.

My rage flared as I accused him of exacerbating what was already a nightmare. ‘You made a mess of everything!’ I shouted. ‘First my mother, and now this? How many more secrets are you hiding? He appeared shocked, as if he had no idea how much anguish he had inflicted. ‘I never intended for any of this to happen,’ he admitted weakly. But his words just fueled the fire.
