After a moment’s hesitation, Ava nodded, accepting the offer of a ride home. The fear of the unknown seemed a little less daunting than the idea of walking alone at night. As she got into the car, a mixture of relief and apprehension enveloped her. She kept her eyes fixed on the road ahead, her mind full of doubts about what the policeman’s true intentions might be.

The policeman, trying to ease the tension, struck up a conversation. He asked Ava about her day, her school and why she was so far from home. Ava, however, sat rigid, answering briefly and evasively. She was completely aware of the device in her pocket, a heavy secret that she wasn’t ready to share with this stranger.
