Before knocking on the door, Nolan took a few minutes to sit in his car. He didn’t expect to feel so nervous, which made him question whether this was the proper thing to do. He instantly regained his composure and realized why he was there: to provide a loving new home for a child. Determined to make the most of his stay, he exited the car and rang the doorbell.

An Eery Silence
Nolan anticipated to hear the excitement of children playing, but when the front door opened, he noted an unsettling silence. “Good morning, Mr. Nolan?” a neat-looking woman asked him. “Ah, yes, ma’am,” Nolan enthusiastically responded. “I am Mrs. Toxipius. “Welcome,” the woman responded, moving aside to let Nolan in. “The children are over here.”
