The person answered with an exhausted sounding “Yeah?” Amanda was not about to be put off by the unexpected impatience, but her voice came through nervously regardless. She informed the person on the other side that she had located the phone by her apartment, and that it might be her daughter’s property. All that she wanted was to get it back to her. The line went silent, with just the sound of heavy breathing to fill the awkward gap. The ‘Mom’ finally responded furiously, swearing at Amanda viciously and demanding that she stop trying to ‘prank’ her.

The woman hung up and Amanda sat there stunned for a while. That was not how she expected her kind gesture to play out. She was perplexed, but did not think too deeply on it, as she was not that invested in any case. She was sure that someone would ring the phone in time and brief her. This would get sorted out, surely. There was some time remaining before she had to start getting glammed up for a big night out with Anna. She picked up her copy of The Good Earth and began munching on chips. She was just starting to get her teeth into the story when a noisy beeping sound alarmed her.
