Technological Hold-Up
It’s no secret that technological advancements have gone through the roof in the last few decades. To perfect the SSN(X), manufacturers want to take their time in making sure that they incorporate the right kind of technology into the subs. It’s important for these vessels to remain competitive relative to existing models, but also in terms of what the other superpowers are designing on their side of the world. A slow and steady development is the best way to get enough research done, and to get the job done most efficiently.

You might have guessed that even though it’s early days for the SSN(X), the U.S. Navy is already budgeting in a way that will make sure that it can buy two of these super subs in 2034. The price of one? A meager $5.5 billion. This is not exactly the kind of purchase any government would make lightly, and perhaps this hefty price tag has a bit to do with why they are giving it enough time, to ensure that the economy is in better shape ahead of the purchase.
